A wrapping knot (also known as a gathering knot) is a fundamental macrame technique used to secure cords neatly at the beginning or end of a project. This guide will walk you through the steps in a simple and beginner-friendly way.

Materials Needed:

  • Macrame cord (any thickness you prefer)

  • Scissors

  • Tape or a clipboard (to hold your work in place)

Steps to Create a Wrapping Knot:

  1. Prepare Your Cords: Gather the cords you want to secure. Hold them together in a bundle.

  2. Cut a Separate Cord: Cut a separate piece of macramé cord about 12 inches (30 cm) long. This will be your wrapping cord.

  3. Create a Loop: Place the wrapping cord alongside the bundle, leaving a small loop at the bottom where you want the knot to end.

  4. Start Wrapping: Hold the top of the wrapping cord in place with one hand, then use the other hand to wrap the long end of the wrapping cord around the bundle and the loop. Wrap tightly and neatly, working your way downward for about 5-10 wraps.

  5. Thread the End Through the Loop: Once you’ve finished wrapping, take the end of the wrapping cord and pass it through the loop you left at the bottom.

  6. Tighten the Knot: Gently pull the top end of the wrapping cord. This will draw the loop up under the wraps, securing the knot in place.

  7. Trim the Ends: Once the knot is secure, trim the excess wrapping cord close to the knot and tuck in any loose ends for a clean finish.

Tips for Success:

  • Keep the wraps tight and even for a polished look.

  • Adjust the length of the wrapping cord based on how many wraps you want.

  • Use a contrasting colour for the wrapping cord for a decorative effect.

Now you have a secure and professional-looking wrapping knot! This technique is great for finishing off wall hangings, plant hangers, and other macrame projects. Happy knotting!
